How to take your Moodboards from Beginner to Professional!

Ever wonder how to get the perfect moodboard??? Sometimes it just takes for me to see one item and I can go to work but sometimes I get stuck and my entire creative thought process comes to a halt. When creating the “perfect” moodboard (whatever that means) you have to make sure that you have all of the essential items to make it come to life. For instance, I was working on the moodboard below and I was just stuck, the design concept made sense in my head BUTTTT not so much on the board. I had no wall art, the curtains looked more for a child’s bedroom than an adult living room and the rug I really thought was a good idea at first but the more and more I looked at it (even squinted) I was like umm NO MA’ AM!!

The Most IMPORTANT part of creating a moodboard is the platform you are using for designs. Some platforms allow you to do certain things that others don’t which will determine the outcome of your design. I personally like to use Morpholioboard but there are numerous different platforms out there for creating moodboards, just do some research and pick the one that would work best for you and what you are designing.

Here is a small list of platforms for you to check out:

  1. Canva
  2. SampleBoard
  3. Adobe Photoshop
  4. Style Tile
  5. Adobe Spark

When creating a moodboard make sure all of the items make sense for the design space. Also, layering, sizing and placement MATTERS!!! Having items scattered all over the place is just NOT A LOOK. The closer and confined the items are, the better (in my non-expert opinion lol).

Four Tips on Creating “Professional Looking” Moodboards:

  1. Add plush realistic pillows to your design. I prefer ones that have the “chopped” look because #1 I love it and #2 it looks more real to me.
  2. Add luxurious curtains! You want to find some curtains that look like they have some weight to them, so I prefer using curtains made from velvet or silk material. Just ordinary curtains look flimsy and kid-like (similar to the ones I used in the first design above).
  3. Find some nice glam lighting that goes with the design concept. I like to use chandeliers but I also use lamps.
  4. Make sure the furniture you are using looks as real as possible. I like to go directly to the websites selling the furniture and use their pictures to get a clear and crisp quality look.
